Former NBA superstar Alonzo Mourning saw the tragedy unfolding in Haiti and decided he wanted to do something about it personally. Mourning arrived in Port-Au-Prince on Friday to help with the rescue and recovery efforts. You have to respect and love Alonzo’s heart….his acts of philanthropy are always with the best intentions – “to really have a postive impact in another’s life”.

Mourning caught a flight with a medical relief group to do “anything they want me to do,” according to CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami news partner the Miami Herald. “I’ll do manual labor, or any other kind of labor. I’m here to help them,” Mourning said.

Mourning said he met Arthur Fournier of Project Medishare for Haiti during a Thursday fundraiser in Miami. The group, founded by Fournier and Barth Green, has been providing medical care to the devastated region.

According to the Herald, Mourning told Fournier, “I want to go,” and was on a plane the next day.

“I’ve been working nonstop assisting all of the doctors from all over the world for the past seven hours,” Mourning told The Associated Press from Port-au-Prince, his cell phone repeatedly breaking up. “We’ve got a lot of patients here, babies, mothers who need a lot of help. We’re running out of supplies, water. People are homeless, people are hungry, it’s such an extreme need for assistance on all different bases.”
